Photo of the Day

Thursday June 8, 2023

We have some good bass fishing on our lakes and they can be so much fun to catch. We're enjoying the cooler temperatures but we still haven't received much rain so the Restricted Fire Zone is still in effect.

Wednesday June 7, 2023

Wednesday June 7, 2023

Lake trout fishing at it's best! Weather has cooled down considerably, 15C this morning with a good east wind. Today will be a good day for some yard work as those pesty mosquitoes were active last night. Don't forgot your bug spray if you're planning on being out and...

Tuesday June 6, 2023

Received some pictures from a guest who recently stayed at our Sandbeach outpost cabin. They had some good fishing for all species. This is just one of the trout that was caught. Although we are still in a heat wave warning it was a very pleasant day yesterday and a...

Monday June 5, 2023

You don't see this everyday, a pileated woodpecker pecking on a window. We think it's confused, thinking it's reflection is another woodpecker. Yes, fishing has been good, just haven't any pictures. We had a thunderstorm roll through yesterday afternoon but we didn't...

Sunday June 4, 2023

Sunday June 4, 2023

It's been a few days since my last post - it's been a bit busy. This photo was taken last night as the moon was rising. I think the reddish-orange glow is due to either the humidity or wildfires. We have had several hot, humid dry consecutive dry days so we are in a...

Tuesday May 30, 2023

Meet Connor, you'll see him working around camp this summer. But he can't work all the time, so Sunday, we went out and caught our dinner. Our hot days are continuing and so is the mosquito hatch. We're very grateful for the winds today.

Monday May 29, 2023

Monday May 29, 2023

Jerry caught and released this northern while fishing at Mount Lake. This year he and his group had better weather than some years as one year they had enough snow to build a small snowman. We're experiencing some hot weather but a south wind is keeping things...

Sunday May 28, 2023

Sunday May 28, 2023

You can't fish for walleye all the time. Tom found a nice size bass while fishing on Pettit and Mount lakes. We have some hot weather heading our way so make sure you have your sunscreen with you. And don't forget bug spray, mosquitos love the hot weather as...

Saturday May 27, 2023

Saturday May 27, 2023

First group at Pettit #1 had some successful days of fishing. Weather wasn't too bad for them - some cooler days, some hot days. We have a busy morning ahead of us before we can relax. Looks like it will be a hot day so a reminder to everyone, if you have a campfire...

Thursday May 25, 2023

Thursday May 25, 2023

This photo was taken on Saturday while we were walleye fishing. There was smoke in the air from all the wild fires out west. Although we are not in a fire ban we encourage everyone to be extra cautious with camp fires. We have had some rain and cool days but the bush...

Wednesday May 24, 2023

Wednesday May 24, 2023

Someone was excited to be out on the water catching walleye. Someday soon Wyatt will be able to catch one of these himself. We've been busy continuing with spring cleaning and repairs and maintenance, which always seems never-ending. We had some rain yesterday which...

Saturday May 20, 2023

Saturday May 20, 2023

Northern Lights ushered in opening of walleye season. The lake was very calm this morning but now there's a bit of a wind. There's still plenty of work to be done as we've "hit the deck running" once again.

Thursday May 18, 2023

Thursday May 18, 2023

This morning's view just after rain went through the area. We did need the rain, things were beginning to get a little dry. Another busy day around here, still lots of spring items to be checked off the list. Walleye season opens in 2 days - yikes!!

Wednesday May 17, 2023

Wednesday May 17, 2023

Do you see the goose in this photo? It is difficult to see her so we ask those who are going through the portage to slow down at the entrance so you don't create a wake. We're sure she is hatching some young ones. Heading back up to outposts today for some more spring...

Tuesday May 16, 2023

Tuesday May 16, 2023

This view never gets old for us as we enjoy our morning coffee on the deck. It's a little breezy but 13C and it's expected to warm to 20C today. More spring cleaning and dock work to be done today. Opening of walleye in 4 days!

Saturday May 13, 2023

Saturday May 13, 2023

And just like that the side-by-side is at the portage ready for the summer. Ice is out on Pettit and Mount so this weekend the docks will be put back in place.

Friday May 12, 2023

Friday May 12, 2023

Ducks take flight as the moon shimmers off the lake early this morning. We have summer like temperatures so Don and I enjoyed our morning coffee on the dock. Don plans on getting the side-by-side to the portage today and then taking a trip up to the outpost cabins....

Thursday May 11, 2023

Thursday May 11, 2023

Main dock was installed yesterday, a sure sign that our season is beginning. We had a very pleasant day yesterday, t-shirt weather and the bugs are starting to arrive. Sometime throughout the night it rained, we got 11.57mm the landscape looks green. Another pleasant...

Wednesday May 10, 2023

Wednesday May 10, 2023

And just like that the ice is gone, 3 days earlier than last year. Yesterday afternoon, Don and I put our boat in the water and went for a cruise to the portage. There was a bit of mushy ice at the far end of the lake but we knew that wouldn't last the night. Now to...

Tuesday May 9, 2023

Tuesday May 9, 2023

Despite some heavy rain yesterday there's still mushy ice floating around the lake, but there's a lot of open water. We just need a strong wind to move it around, then it would melt completely. Don won't put any docks in until all the ice is gone, not taking a chance...

Monday May 8, 2023

Monday May 8, 2023

This photo is a little deceiving as there is still ice out in the middle of Manion. There's a huge open area across from the island and with wind and rain the mushy ice will quickly be gone. Since midnight we have received 25.66 mm of rain, good for lake levels.

Sunday May 7, 2023

Sunday May 7, 2023

The ice is looking pretty mushy and we see more open water along shore line and between the islands. 8C this morning with an east wind, that will move the ice around.

Friday May 5, 2023

Friday May 5, 2023

There was some movement of the ice yesterday. It didn't freeze last night, it's windy this morning and there's rain in the forecast so we may be seeing more open water soon. You can tell the it has opened up between the two islands on Manion. Don's thinking it will...

Thursday May 4, 2023

Thursday May 4, 2023

We had to say goodbye to another great camp dog yesterday. Jasper was the best. Even though he'd bark at you he would never hurt you, he was a camp greeter. Jasper, aka Big Dog, loved laying on the beach, going for boat rides, sitting at the front of the pontoon,...

Wednesday May 3, 2023

Wednesday May 3, 2023

Well there was a bit of a change in the lake yesterday and you definitely wouldn't want to walk out on the ice, I think there would be a good chance that you would fall through. It's a much calmer morning but still minus 1C. Temperatures will rebound ready to attack...

Tuesday May 2,2023

Tuesday May 2,2023

The lake is opening up slowly each day although with below freezing temperatures it freezes again at night. We continue to have windy days and nights and we can see openings out in the lake.

Monday May 1, 2023

Monday May 1, 2023

Despite all the snowstorms (3 in all) April seemed to have flown by and here we are in May. 20 days till the opening of walleye season, yikes! Yesterday was a windy day, out of the north so we actually lost a bit of ice and the lake is looking darker, that's always a...

April 28, 2023

April 28, 2023

Our view this morning. The lake is beginning to change, we can see darker areas and it's opening up along the beach. WE hope we are over winter like weather and snow storms. The forecast is suggesting we may get some rain so that will help make the snow and ice...

Wednesday April 26, 2023

Wednesday April 26, 2023

This photo was taken last week when Don was up to Pettit #2 cabin - excited to see open water but it was unfortunate that he could get up to Mount Lake. It's been freezing overnight so Manion Lake just looks white, although we can see our beach now. Once again with...

Tuesday April 25, 2023

Tuesday April 25, 2023

The sun isn't shining off the lake this morning, minus 8C. We will see a high of hopefully we'll reach a high of 6C and we might even see the sun. Don's picked up some material for the extension of the laundry room so he'll work on that project today.

Monday April 24, 2023

Monday April 24, 2023

A look at the lake this morning, still plenty of snow and ice. It was minus 8C early this morning so not much damage done to the white stuff throughout the night. We do get a bit of melting in the afternoons when it warms up. There certainly isn't a lot we can do...

Saturday April 22, 2023

Saturday April 22, 2023

In memory of Larry Tiedemann. Larry was an avid hunter. He bear hunted with Don before we purchased Hyatt's Manion Lake Camp, later Don guided him moose hunting. It was a successful hunt and an even better adventure to retrieve the moose. It's snowing once again this...

Friday April 21, 2023

Friday April 21, 2023

In memory of Dick Heyrman, he enjoyed many fishing trips and caught his share of fish. We have had yet another winter storm, our third one this month. Since late yesterday we have received between 20 and 30cm of snow and it is still snowing. I suppose it's a good...

Wednesday April 19,2023

Wednesday April 19,2023

As planned Don got to the Pettit Lake Outposts and put up some firewood. There's no way he can get to Mount Lake or Sandbeach as the ice has melted away from the shore. Guess he may have to do firewood by boat. We're in a winter storm watch, isn't that what we're...

Tuesday April 18, 2023

Tuesday April 18, 2023

Brilliant sunshine -6C this morning but temperatures will warm to 8C this afternoon. That will make some of this snow melt. Don has ventured to Pettit outpost to put up some firewood. He'd much rather do firewood when there is ice on the lake than when there's open...

Monday April 17, 2023

Monday April 17, 2023

Well our lake looks a lot different than it did on Saturday. We had a significant snow storm yesterday, we likely received close to a foot of snow. I suppose it will be good for the lake levels but boy, it's going to make things awfully mucking again. Don may manage...

Saturday April 15, 2023

Saturday April 15, 2023

The lake is beginning to look dark. Although Don currently has his snowmachine parked on the lake he's not going anywhere with it except to a shed for summer storage. 2C this morning and cloudy. We had a thunderstorm roll through last night around 10pm. It was...

Friday April 14, 2023

Friday April 14, 2023

Our beach showed up but there's still plenty of ice. Don took a ride to the portage yesterday afternoon. He was hoping to get up to the outposts to begin putting up firewood but there's too much slush ice on top of the good ice so he'll have to wait. Instead he's...

Wednesday April 12, 2023

Wednesday April 12, 2023

Photo of the lake this morning, not much change since yesterday, there isn't as much water on the lake. I suppose cool temperatures in the evening assist with drainage. We reached a high of 20C yesterday afternoon, our yard has dried up significantly. Don has a...

Tuesday April 11, 2023

Tuesday April 11, 2023

This photo was taken yesterday afternoon. 19C makes the ice very wet and helps make the snow disappear. There is definitely a lot of water running through our yard. In 2021 the ice went out on April 10, last year ice went out May 13. If temperatures continue to be...

Monday April 10, 2023

Monday April 10, 2023

We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful Easter weekend, we sure did. Don got some solar batteries up to the outposts. We all went walleye fishing on late Saturday afternoon and we all caught at least one walleye. And we enjoyed Easter dinner at friends. With much warmer...

Saturday April 8, 2023

Saturday April 8, 2023

Looks like today is shaping up to be a beautiful April day. It was minus 11C early t his morning but it has already warmed to minus 2C. Yesterday, Don and the girls rode to the outpost cabins, today he's going to begin taking the solar batteries to the outposts. We're...

Thursday April 6, 2023

Thursday April 6, 2023

We are out of the winter storm warning but we still have flurries this morning even though the sun is trying to break through the clouds. And we have white fluffy snow again. Thanks to one of our guests who emailed yesterday to say Duluth area had brown snow as well...

Wednesday April 5, 2023

Wednesday April 5, 2023

As predicted we have a storm. Snow and wind began last night and this morning the district has woken up to brown snow instead of our usual covering of white. There are a lot of theories going around as to why this has happened but many don't make sense. The wind was...

Tuesday April 4, 2023

Tuesday April 4, 2023

Spring time fishing was successful and tasty. There's still plenty of ice on the lakes and snow in the bush, and we're expecting more snow. We are in a winter storm warning, which means we will be receiving more snow over possibly the next 3 days. I suppose all the...
